WANDERERS RULE BATTLE OF THE WEST

And prove they still own Macarthur
JANAKAN SEEMAMPILLAI
WESTERN Sydney Wanderers have shown they still own the Macarthur region after a resounding 4-0 thrashing of Macarthur Bulls.

In front of a crowd of around 2000 people at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night, the Wanderers dominated the first half, racing to a 3-0 half-time lead, before holding off a Bulls onslaught in the second half to clinch three vital points and keep their 2025-26 A-League Men’s season alive.

From the opening whistle the Wanderers came to play, and Steve Urgakovic opened the scoring in the sixth minute, finishing off a beautiful team move after the perfect pass from Alex Gerbasch.

The Wanderers continued to build their chances and had a goal ruled offside, before a slice of luck saw Brandon Borrello put through Bozhidar Kraev in the 24th minute to double the Red & Black’s lead.

Ryan Fraser took advantage of a mistake from Bulls’ keeper Alex Robinson in the 43rd minute, cleverly lobbing the youngster whose stray clearance fell right into the path of the former Scottish international, after excellent pressure from Borrello.

The majority Red & Black in the crowd were in a buoyant mood going into the second half, and their team’s resilience in defence just added to the atmosphere.

The Wanderers defended brilliantly, with every Bulls’ possession being accompanied with plenty of defensive pressure from the Red & Black.

In the 70th minute, Dylan Scicluna produced one of the highlights of the season, receiving the ball in his own half, he danced around four Bulls’ defenders before dashing down the left wing and delivering the perfect pass for Borrello to sweep home to make it 4-0.

The Bulls threw everything in the final 20 minutes, but the Wanderers muscled up in defence, ensuring they kept a clean sheet to go with the three points.

They are now five points away from the sixth placed Bulls with seven rounds still left this season.

The Wanderers travel to top-of-the-table Newcastle next Saturday afternoon at 5pm, knowing a win would really bring them back into the finals mix.

The Bulls host Central Coast on Wednesday night as they look to bounce back after six games without a win in all competitions.
